He began his law enforcement career with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office in 2009 as a reserve deputy and was later sponsored by Sheriff Jeff Shaver to attend the Jefferson County Police Academy, graduating with Session 22 in 2016. In 2019, while serving with the Leesburg Police Department, Sergeant Chatman rescued a thirteen-year-old girl from drowning, an act of heroism for which he was presented with the Life Saving Award by the Town of Leesburg.

His professionalism and leadership led to his promotion to Assistant Chief, and later his appointment as Police Chief of Leesburg, where he served from 2021 to 2024.

In 2024, Sergeant Chatman returned to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office as an Investigator, assigned to the Drug Crimes Unit. That same year, he graduated from both SWAT School and PIT School (Precision Immobilization Technique), expanding his tactical expertise and leadership skillset.
